Number in the family: 1
Years rowing: 13+
Favorite Hopkins tradition: New Years Eve at the Farm (candlelight sledding/skating)
Favorite memory with dad: Early morning phone calls (4:30am) to hash out our practice plans for the day
Favorite rowing memory: IRAs 2021, got to coach Lucy in the double and have Dad be there days after his surgery to watch the whole thing—both of us were so proud of her and our team and many tears were shed 🙂 Also coaching Lu to back to back ACRA titles was pretty dope too.

Emma Hopkins

Number in the family: 2
Years rowing: 12+ years of competitive rowing. First strokes at 7 or 8.
Favorite Hopkins tradition: Loud, unhinged, laughter-filled dinner times, with as many family and friends as can squeeze around the table.
Favorite memory with dad: Not a singular memory but a string of memories… Between long homework assignments, and late rowing practices, I spent a lot of time in the car with Dad (both my highschool headmaster and my coach) driving back from school or the boathouse, working through my fears and insecurities athletically, academically, and personally. His words of wisdom? “Don’t despair, Em.” “Don’t let your dreams be small.” I love you Dad!
Favorite rowing memory: One of my favorite rowing memories pre-dates my competitive rowing career. When I was about 8 or 9, Dad, his mom (Farmor), Maddie, Ben, and I raced a 3-generation coxed quad at the Towpath Regatta on the Mohawk River in Scotia, NY. Likely the slowest race of my life but also one of the most memorable.

Number in the family: 3
Years rowing: 12+ competitive rowing plus 2 of coaching.
Favorite Hopkins tradition: My favorite Hopkins tradition is skiing as a family. It started out with 3 second runs in our backyard and stacks of tables dad would put together on our porch to increase the speed and run times to 4 seconds. Next dad took us to SkiVenture where we learned to ride a 20+ mph rope tow in the dead of night during a snowstorm. It has turned into weekends in VT or trips to the Rockies, but the smiling faces of Hopkins photographed on mountains aren’t just poses. There is simply nothing more fun than a day in the mountains on the snow with siblings, and we are so grateful that dad instilled that love in us.
Favorite memory with dad: All my favorite memories of dad revolve around building things. Besides his relationship with God, his family and rowing, dad was incredibly passionate about building. Some of my favorite memories involve late night trips to friends or neighbors who had it problems with plumbing, heating or electrical and dad would display not only his knowledge and passion for building and fixing but his love and sacrifice for others. His ability to build up the communities, people and of course the physical structures around him is part of dad’s legacy that I strive to continue.
Favorite rowing memory: My favorite rowing memory is winning the 2016 Stotesbury Cup Regatta. The Augustine team that year consisted of my sister Emma, my double’s partner Ethan and my Dad. We were a small and unknown team and felt that we had no business even racing a final with some of the fastest scholastic crews. I remember dad explaining that no one belonged in a race until they earned it. We pulled hard and dug deep in the final. I learned that no one belongs on a podium before the flag drops and everyone can earn it. Understanding and believing that completely changed the rest of my rowing career.

Lucia Hopkins

Number in the family: 4th
Years rowing: 11+ of competitive rowing.
Favorite Hopkins tradition: Growing up on various bodies of water, we have always been surrounded by boats: canoes, kayaks, shells, etc. For a large part of our childhood, Sunday afternoons were reserved for family adventures and often these were centered around boats and the hours spent paddling around, swimming, and exploring. Whether we were junk hunting on some islands on the Mohawk River, attempting to white water canoe down the Tenandeho Creek, or racing double coxed doubles and singles on a lake, the laughter and joy from those afternoons will always stay with me. Dad led the charge with enthusiasm on all the adventures and instilled so much love and appreciation for time on the water in me.
Favorite memory with dad: While it is rivaled by many, some of my most memorable times with dad are centered around driving. He taught me how to drive, how to drive a trailer and spent hours driving me back and forth from ballet classes. All those drives are filled with memorable conversations dreaming about goals, plans and obviously future rowing races. Dad didn’t shy away from dreaming and scheming and that is something I hold close to my heart and strive to emulate. He showed me how to trust the Lord and live boldly in that faith through those dreams. Love you Dad!!
Favorite rowing memory: I have had the chance to race doubles my entire rowing career because of the small teams I have been on and from those small boats have come the most formative memories. My favorite rowing memories center around the last 250m of those races when, with each doubles partner, we dug deeper and fought harder than before. Often the races end with tears and hugs knowing that because of the trust we had in each other we were able to finish strong.

Abi Hopkins

Number in the family: 5
Years rowing: 8+ years of competitive rowing.
Favorite Hopkins tradition: The somewhat annual Christmas polar plunge, where many of us throw on whatever random team unis we can find (most a little too tight/ loose in the wrong places) and plunge into the freezing Hudson River (for fun).
Favorite memory with dad: A favorite memory of dad I have were his early morning chats. Dad would always be up before 6 am, making breakfast for us all, working on some project, reading his Bible, or finishing up his grading, etc. Often, he would get bored being the only one up so he would come into my room (or any of my siblings) and wake me up to chat. He would ask about my friends, my academics, my dreams (ensuring of course, that some big rowing race was on my radar) and then he would pray over me. He taught me to dream, to love others well, and most importantly, to put God at the center of my life. I love you dad!!!
Favorite rowing memory: My favorite rowing memory was Scholastic Nationals in 2019 in Dayton Ohio. I was rowing a freshman 4x and we had had a very unpredictable season, never knowing quite where we stood amongst other crews, or when we were truly giving it our all. Dad sat us down after the semis and explained to us what he thought the issue was and his plan to tackle it (and achieve world domination- of course!). He encouraged us and talked it through with each of us, and then sent us onto the course. After a grueling race with several crabs caught and boats cut off, we came out on top in third place! We rowed towards the shore and dad came running and dancing out into the water to meet us (followed by the rest of the team).  I’ve never felt more proud or celebrated. He was the best coach.

Lily Hopkins

Number in the family: 6
Years rowing: 8 years of competitive rowing. First strokes at 2 or 3.
Favorite Hopkins tradition: Trips to the Head of the Charles to cheer on siblings and friends and visit with Farmor.
Favorite memory with dad: One of my favorite memories with Dad was the quite frequently occurring event of going to Lowes. These trips always consisted of Dad pushing us around on some sort of cart while singing a bit too loudly and every once in a while ended with a sweet treat from the checkout aisle!
Favorite rowing memory: My favorite rowing memory is training the spring of my freshman year. We had a fast freshman quad (dad’s favorite event) and Dad was SO excited about it which made practices so much fun. We ended up winning Stotes that year and brought dad the trophy the evening after his brain surgery which is a moment I will never forget.

Number in the family: 7
Years rowing: 5 years of competitive. First strokes at 7 or 8.
Favorite Hopkins tradition: I love to go on whole family excursions like loading 3 canoes and a couple kayaks on top of the 12 passenger van, and braving the Tenandeho Creek, which ended with everyone in the water and all the boats upside down as we dumped into the Hudson, or hiking up Hopkins Mountain in early spring with not a single pair of spikes or snowshoes.
Favorite memory with dad: My favorite memory with Dad would be all the time we spent together while building our house: from the countless Lowe’s trips and the corresponding public humiliation that occurred when Dad would sing, “Thank you for coming to Lowes. Sit back and relax and enjoy the show!” upon entering the store every time, to the time we spent on shaky scaffolding removing the old chimney that was always about to fall into the road underneath us.
Favorite rowing memory: My favorite rowing memory is Stotesbury Cup 2023 when I placed 3rd in the Freshman’s Boys Quad.  All of my boat mates had been coached by Dad and had written something on their back in Sharpie to commemorate Dad and remind us that we were doing this for him. Then my older brother Ben, our new coach, met us on the dock for our medals. My favorite rowing memory with Dad has to be the early morning practice for a Mohawk Rowing when I would fall asleep in the coaching launch and Dad would pick me up and nestle me into the bow amidst all the lifejackets.

Favorite Hopkins tradition: Ski Mondays at Mount Snow! These are great days when we take the day off from school to ski with family and friends!
